Cypress, an exceptionally long-lived evergreen tree with needle-type leaves, often grows near cemeteries. With spicy, resinous top notes, and sweet, smoky, balsamic, woody undertones, steam distillation from the needles and twigs removes the essential oil. Some common uses for cypress essential oil have been bone spurs and bunions, circulation, swelling, flu, muscle fatigue, pain, as well as strengthen the retina and revitalize the skin. Apply cypress directly to the skin without diluting.

Some historical uses for cypress are for its benefits on the urinary system. The Chinese valued this oil for its benefits to the liver and to the respiratory system.

The properties of this oil include antibacterial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitoxic, astringent, diuretic, and tonic. Cypress is a powerful astringent and venous decongestant, and therefore, recommended whenever there is excess fluid. This makes it the first choice mixed in an ointment to treat varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Cypress also helps to relieve the hot flashes associated with menopause. In a bath or foot bath, it can help prevent excessive sweating. Overall, cypress is warming, drying and soothing.

The clean, fresh, woody aroma of cypress essential oil makes it a welcome addition to men’s skin care preparation, and it helps acne, oil and overhydrated skin. It also helps with nervous weakness and anxiety, restoring a strong, calm demeanor. Aromatically, cypress influences and strengthens and helps ease the feeling of loss. It creates a feeling of security and grounding.

Healing Traits

Psychologically, cypress purifies, protects and refreshes, and was traditionally used in purifying incense. Like juniper, it provides excellent psychic protection and, as a symbol of eternity, cypress instills strength and wisdom. It also helps the flow of subtle, stagnant energies. Since cypress was dedicated to Pluto, the god of the underworld, it is associated with the base (or root) chakra. Its uses include meditations, for bereavement, difficult transitions and painful changes.

When using cypress essential oil in a blend, use it as a middle note, and an equalizer. It blends well with bergamot, clary sage, lavender, lemon, orange, and sandalwood.
