Cypress, an exceptionally long-lived evergreen tree with needle-type leaves, often grows near cemeteries. With spicy, resinous top notes, and sweet, smoky, balsamic, woody undertones, steam distillation from the needles and twigs removes the essential oil. Some common uses for cypress essential oil have been bone spurs and bunions, circulation, swelling, flu, muscle fatigue, pain, as well as strengthen the retina and revitalize the skin. Apply cypress directly to the skin without diluting.

Some historical uses for cypress are for its benefits on the urinary system. The Chinese valued this oil for its benefits to the liver and to the respiratory system.

The properties of this oil include antibacterial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitoxic, astringent, diuretic, and tonic. Cypress is a powerful astringent and venous decongestant, and therefore, recommended whenever there is excess fluid. This makes it the first choice mixed in an ointment to treat varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Cypress also helps to relieve the hot flashes associated with menopause. In a bath or foot bath, it can help prevent excessive sweating. Overall, cypress is warming, drying and soothing.

The clean, fresh, woody aroma of cypress essential oil makes it a welcome addition to men’s skin care preparation, and it helps acne, oil and overhydrated skin. It also helps with nervous weakness and anxiety, restoring a strong, calm demeanor. Aromatically, cypress influences and strengthens and helps ease the feeling of loss. It creates a feeling of security and grounding.

Healing Traits

Psychologically, cypress purifies, protects and refreshes, and was traditionally used in purifying incense. Like juniper, it provides excellent psychic protection and, as a symbol of eternity, cypress instills strength and wisdom. It also helps the flow of subtle, stagnant energies. Since cypress was dedicated to Pluto, the god of the underworld, it is associated with the base (or root) chakra. Its uses include meditations, for bereavement, difficult transitions and painful changes.

When using cypress essential oil in a blend, use it as a middle note, and an equalizer. It blends well with bergamot, clary sage, lavender, lemon, orange, and sandalwood.

Use caution when using cypress essential oil during pregnancy.

Grapeseed oil

Grapeseed oil is another carrier oil that is used a lot in aromatherapy. It is fine, light, non greasy, as well as fast absorbing. It is hypo-allergenic and baby-friendly. As the name implies, this oil comes from the grape seed. It works very well for skin that does not absorb other oils very quickly. This oil is not only anti-inflammatory, but also antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. This oil is a good choice for any aromatherapy blend. It does have a short shelf life – only 3-4 months, so if you purchase this one, be sure to use it quickly.

Following are some reasons to use grapeseed oil:

to moisturize skin, to soften and gives the skin the ability to bounce back,

heal acne by attacking the bacteria deep in your pores,

lighten skin and helps protect your skin for absorbing the full damage of UV rays,

tighten pores,

reduce the appearance of scars,

remove makeup

Although this carrier oil penetrates your skin quickly, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling oily. To use this oil on your face, massage several drops into clean skin before you go to bed at night. You can repeat the process in the morning, if desired. When using on the face, add a drop or two of frankincense, rose or myrrh essential oil. This will help eliminate any fine lines or wrinkles. It is anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and contains antioxidant properties. With high amounts of Omega chain fatty acids and Vitamin E, this oil has become a popular topical treatment for skin. Since grapeseed oil doesn’t clog pores, it’s ideal for all skin types, including oily skin that needs moisturizing. This oil may be unsafe for those with any type of blood condition, those about to have surgery, or those people taking blood thinners.

Roman chamomile essential oil

In order to produce Roman Chamomile essential oil, the daisy flower is steam distilled. It is a perennial herb with a low growing, creeping habit, delicate, feathery leaves and daisy-like white flowers carried on the plant’s many hairy stems. The primary uses for the oil are bee stings, calming, hyperactivity, inability to sleep, muscle spasms, rashes, as well as shock and dry skin.

One can either apply the oil neat (no dilution required), or diluted (1 drop carrier oil to 1 drop essential oil), for children and for those with sensitive skin. Although you can use this oil in a diffuser, you may also inhale the aroma directly.

Roman chamomile essential oil is an anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, calming and relaxing oil. Historically used by the ancient Romans, it gave them a clear mind and to empower them with courage for their battles. Chamomile, known as the “plant’s physician”, cures any ailing plant placed near it.

Roman chamomile also neutralizes allergies and increases the ability of the skin to regenerate. Helps to cleanse the blood. It may help with allergies, muscle tension, calming, restless legs and skin conditions. It is mild enough to use on children and infants. Roman chamomile essential oil affects emotional balance, as well as the nervous system and skin.

Chamomile is recognized as safe for human consumption by the FDA. When used on children, dilute the oil with a carrier oil. Also dilute this oil when used on sensitive skin.

If you are using this oil in a blend, it is a middle note. It blends well with lavender, rose, geranium and clary sage. The aroma is fresh, sweet, fruity-herbaceous, and apple-like.

The oil comes from all green parts of the plant, including stems and leaves. Helichrysum is also commonly known as immortelle and everlasting. It is an aromatic herb with daisy-like flowers which dry as the plant matures. Some common uses for these dry flowers are in dried flower arrangements, as well as for medicinal purposes.

Common, primary uses of the oil are: tooth abscess, bruises, cleansing, nose bleeds, sunscreen, swollen eyes, impaired taste, wounds, bleeding (I have used a drop of it on a small cut or puncture in order to help stop the bleeding.) Helichrysum is safe to use neat when used topically (no dilution required) on skin, however, it is best to dilute for children.

Sweet almond oil is a carrier oil that is used most frequently in essential oil blends for the skin. It is a good, all-purpose, popular and moderately priced carrier oil, and is suitable for all skin types, especially dry, mature or sensitive skin. This carrier oil is pale yellow, almost odorless and has excellent emollient (soothing) properties. It is rich in vitamins, minerals and protein and its use in cosmetics for its therapeutic properties is extensive.

This carrier oil contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E, minerals,, fatty acids, and proteins.

This oil relieves itching. It is helpful for dryness, inflammation, burns, and thread veins and is great as a massage base for sensitive and irritated skin. It is softening and revitalizing, as well as nourishing for the skin, as well as an excellent lubricant. Add this oil to blends for hair, face, massage. It is also useful in cooking. This oil is probably the best multi-purpose base oil for massage.

You may wonder if there is a difference between sweet almond oil and just almond oil. There is a difference! Almond oil is the generic term for all types of oils that come from almonds of both types – both bitter and sweet. This oil comes from the part of the tree that grows pink flowers and bitter almonds. However, the part that produces white flowers and sweet almonds is where we get the sweet oil. This is a type of almond oil coming from sweet almonds only.

There are more than 600 species of eucalyptus, of which about 20 are harvested for their essential oil. They are tall evergreen trees with long, narrow leaves and white-yellow flowers. Harvesters use steam distillation to process the oils from the leaves and twigs.

Eucalyptus essential oil comes from Australia, however it may also come from the US, Brazil, China, Portugal, Russia or Spain. It has a medicinal (camphor), fresh and earthy scent. It helps the skin and the respiratory systems. The top uses for this oil are to relieve inflammation within the respiratory system. Add eucalyptus to a warm bath for muscle aches and pains. For inflammation, add fractionated coconut, or another carrier oil, and massage into the inflamed area.

Eucalyptus is an analgesic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent. This oil should not be used internally, and use with caution with small children. Apply Eucalyptus oil neat to the skin, meaning it does not require dilution. It is probably one of the most recognized essential oils with its use as a decongestant.

Use this oil in a bath or massage during cold season. Use it as a chest rub for congestion, also add it to a vaporizer to keep the air fresh and germ free. It is very effective against viruses and bacteria. Eucalyptus essential oil also has a use as an insect repellant. Psychologically, it is piercing, stimulating and purifying. It is useful in meditations when you have a cold, and it helps to keep the mind clear.

When using eucalyptus oil in a blend, it is a middle note. It blends well with lavender, lemon, lemongrass, thyme, as well as sandalwood.

Many essential oils, oil blends and products made with essential oils, require a carrier oil. Fractionated coconut oil is a popular oil for this use. As an example, Oregano essential oil is a “hot” oil, meaning that if you are applying it to your skin, you need to dilute it with a carrier oil or it will burn your skin. Often times it is necessary to dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil that will help drive the essential oil into the skin deeper in order to heal better. Many products contain carrier oils that aid the essential oils to do their healing, such as a facial serum. Coastal Breeze Aromatherapy produces many essential oil blends and roller bottle oil blends that contain fractionated coconut oil. The Facial Serum uses jojoba oil as the carrier oil. The carrier helps the essential oils spread better and go further.

Fractionate coconut oil is a light and absorbent carrier oil that will help increase the essential oil distribution while leaving the skin feeling smooth and soft. It is clear and odorless and has no greasy feeling. It does not stain and easily washes out of sheets and clothing, making it an exceptional oil for massage therapy. Fractionated Coconut Oil (also known as FCO) does not become solid and has a shelf life of about 48 months.

Fractionated coconut oil is suitable for normal, dry, and very dry skin. It glides easily over the skin and absorbs completely to help distribution. This oil is a moisture-locking moisturizer that is antibacterial. It is used for cracked skin, dandruff, nappy rash, eczema, psoriasis and stretch marks.

Use with caution on acne-prone skin as some find this oil exacerbates breakouts.
